Lake Tahoe dinner cruise: what to book
Dinner on the Dixie II paddlewheeler or drinks on a 1966 yacht: what each Lake Tahoe evening cruise includes, what costs extra and who each suits.
Reserve your Tahoe dinner cruise ↗Quick answer
For a sit-down dinner on Lake Tahoe, book the M.S. Dixie II sunset dinner cruise from Zephyr Cove: three courses, live music and Emerald Bay in about two and a half hours. If you want a smaller boat and no meal, the two-hour sunset cruise on a 1966 yacht leaves from Tahoe Keys Marina. Alcohol costs extra on the Dixie II, and you should choose your main course at least 24 hours ahead.

Dinner or drinks: the first decision
Lake Tahoe has two kinds of evening cruise, and they are not the same night out. One is a dinner on a large paddlewheeler, with a set menu, live music and a full bar. The other is a drinks cruise on a small yacht, with a single included glass and a bag of snacks. Both head out toward Emerald Bay, and both are sold as sunset trips. Decide what you want in your hands for two hours, a plate or a glass, and the choice mostly makes itself. The third option is a daytime sailing, covered below.
- Want a proper meal at a table: the Dixie II dinner cruise
- Want a quieter boat, a drink and fewer people: the 1966 yacht
- Want daylight and a commentary instead of dinner: the daytime Dixie II cruise
What the Dixie II dinner includes
The dinner cruise is a three-course meal with a main course you pick from four. The resort's 2026 menu starts with warm rolls and a baby-lettuce salad with mozzarella, then offers a ribeye, a salmon, a roasted chicken or a wild mushroom ragout, and finishes with cheesecake and berries. Soft drinks, coffee and tea come with it, plus an audio guide, restrooms on board and all fees and taxes. After dinner you can stay in the climate-controlled indoor seating or go outside. The mobile ticket reaches you straight after booking, so nothing needs printing.
- Three-course dinner, main course of your choice
- Soft drinks, coffee and tea
- Audio guide and live music
- All fees and taxes
What costs extra
Alcohol is the big one. Signature cocktails and wine are for sale at a full bar through the evening, and the ticket does not cover them, so plan for a round or two if you like a glass with dinner. The 2026 menu notes that on-board purchases are by credit or debit card only, so bring a card, not cash. Parking at the resort is a separate daily fee too. Pickup is an option you choose when you book, with its own conditions: the shuttle only stops at pickup points confirmed in advance, and you confirm yours by the cut-off in your confirmation.
Emerald Bay from the deck
The cruise heads for Emerald Bay, a glacier-carved inlet on the lake's southwest shore. The bay is about 1.7 miles long and two-thirds of a mile across at its widest, and it was named a National Natural Landmark in 1969. In the middle sits Fannette Island, the only island in Lake Tahoe. The ruin of a stone tea house, built by a wealthy summer resident, still stands on top. Seeing the bay from the water, at the end of a dinner, is the point of the evening, and the audio guide fills in the history as you pass. Since 1994 the water of the bay has also been part of the state park, which protects the wrecks and other items on its bottom.
Vikingsholm, the castle on the shore
Vikingsholm is a 38-room summer house that Lora Josephine Knight built in 1929 in the Scandinavian style, using mostly local stone and timber. She and her architect travelled to Scandinavia for ideas first, and about 200 workers built the house. Some wings have sod roofs, and carved dragon heads finish the beams of another. On the cruise you see it from the water, up close. Walking down to it is a separate outing: the trail from the highway parking lot is steep and about a mile long, and the house is open for tours only in the summer months.

The Dixie II itself
The M.S. Dixie II is a paddlewheeler that holds 500 passengers and is the largest cruising vessel in South Lake Tahoe. The first Dixie came to the lake in 1949, and this second boat was designed for Tahoe's waters. It was built in Wisconsin and launched at Zephyr Cove in 1994, replacing the original Dixie, which sailed the lake from 1972 to 1993. Dinner seating tops out at 300, so on a full night the dining room is busy but never has to hold the whole boat. The vessel has indoor space, outside viewing areas and a third deck, it is climate controlled inside, and it sails all year.
The lighter option: a 1966 yacht
Lake Tahoe Bleu Wave runs a two-hour sunset cruise on a classic yacht built in 1966, more than 70 feet long and carrying up to 47 people. It leaves from Tahoe Keys Marina. The fare includes soft drinks, coffee, juice, water, snacks and one beer, glass of wine or glass of champagne, and a bar is stocked for anything more. Aboard there is a fireplace, a lounge, a stateroom, a fly-bridge and a large open bow. Guests describe the snacks as small, so eat beforehand. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before, and payment can wait until later.
Daytime instead of dinner?
The same paddlewheeler runs a daytime scenic cruise to Emerald Bay and Vikingsholm, lasting a little over two hours, with a narrated tour of how the bay formed and who built the castle. It suits anyone who cares more about the light on the water than a meal. You buy snacks and drinks on board rather than getting dinner, and a photographer on board sells pictures. If the evening slot is sold out or you only have an afternoon free, it is the closest substitute for the same scenery.
How much sunset to expect
A cruise sold as a sunset trip still depends on the season and the departure time. Dinner is served on board, and some guests have written that the sun was nearly down by the time they finished eating. Emerald Bay also sits under the Sierra crest, so the sun can slip behind a ridge before it touches the horizon, leaving colour in the clouds across the lake instead. Check the departure time for your date, and expect more daylight in summer than in winter. The practical guide covers the months in more detail.

Booking, cancelling and timing
The Dixie II dinner cruise carries free cancellation up to two days before departure, for a full refund, and it is marked as likely to sell out, so a summer weekend is worth booking well ahead. Contact the operator at least 24 hours before sailing to choose your main course. The yacht cruise cancels free up to 24 hours before, and payment can wait until later. Whichever boat you pick, arrive at the dock 30 minutes before departure; the practical guide walks through the boarding.
Who this isn't for
Skip the Dixie II dinner if you want alcohol included, because it is not. Skip it if you need to reach the upper deck by lift: wheelchairs are allowed on board, but there is no elevator to the second deck. And skip these cruises if you want to walk through Vikingsholm: a boat trip passes the castle, and going inside means the separate summer tour. The dinner cruise is a seated meal with live music, not a late-night party, and anyone who dislikes a full boat should know the Dixie II carries up to 500 passengers.
Frequently asked questions
Is alcohol included on the Lake Tahoe dinner cruise?
No. The M.S. Dixie II ticket includes soft drinks, coffee and tea, and cocktails and wine are for sale at a full bar. On the 1966 yacht cruise, one beer, glass of wine or glass of champagne is included.
How long is the Dixie II dinner cruise?
About two and a half hours. The booking page shows the departure time for your date, and you should be at the dock 30 minutes before it.
Can I choose my main course?
Yes. The choices are cowboy ribeye, roasted chicken, broiled salmon or a mushroom ragu. The operator asks you to make your choice at least 24 hours before departure.
What should I wear on a Lake Tahoe cruise?
Dress as you would for a casual restaurant and bring a jacket. Indoor seating is climate controlled, but the open decks get cool once the sun drops, even in summer.
Can I take a wheelchair on board?
Wheelchairs are permitted, but there is no elevator to the second deck. The cruise is marked as wheelchair accessible, so ask the operator which areas you can reach before you book.
Will I see the sunset on the cruise?
Not for certain. How much sunset you see depends on the season, the departure time and the weather. Check the start time for your date, and expect an earlier sunset in autumn and winter.
