Quick answer

The M.S. Dixie II sails from Zephyr Cove, Nevada, at 760 U.S. Highway 50. Be at the dock 30 minutes before departure with your mobile ticket, and wait at the end of the pier for the boarding call. Dress for a casual dinner and carry a jacket for the deck. Late spring and summer give the most daylight, and the sun sets much earlier in winter, so check the departure time for your date.

Where the boat leaves from

Every Dixie II cruise leaves from Zephyr Cove Resort & Marina on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe, at 760 U.S. Highway 50, Zephyr Cove, NV 89448. The cove lies about six miles north of South Lake Tahoe on the same highway, which also serves Stateline and its casinos. Your ticket is a mobile ticket that reaches your phone right after booking. You do not need to print it, and the booking page shows the departure time for your date.

Driving there and parking

From the south shore, drive north on Highway 50 to Zephyr Cove. The resort offers limited on-site parking, and the daily parking fee is not part of the cruise ticket. Because the lot is limited, arrive with time to spare rather than cutting it fine, especially on summer weekends. Leave extra minutes for traffic on the highway, and remember that the 30-minute boarding window starts at the dock, not at the car park. If you would rather not drive after dinner, or you plan to have a drink with it, the pickup option below is the alternative.

Using the pickup option

The cruise has a version with pickup. If you choose it, confirm your pickup before departure: the shuttle needs notice to schedule a stop (your confirmation gives the cut-off), and it only stops where a pickup has been confirmed in advance. If you pick the option that says you do not know yet, you have to phone the operator to confirm and schedule it. The resort's own booking page lists the hotels and casinos its shuttle serves, with meeting times, so check that yours is on it before you pick a date.

Boarding step by step

Check in at the dock 30 minutes before the departure time to receive your boarding pass. Guests with prepaid reservations can wait for the boarding call at the end of the pier. The resort reserves the right to search guests and their bags before they board, so travel light and keep valuables in one place. Service animals are allowed on the cruise and other animals are not. Smoking is banned inside the boat and on the third deck and outside viewing areas, so step to a permitted spot before you go aboard.

  • Arrive 30 minutes before departure
  • Show the mobile ticket and collect your boarding pass
  • Wait at the end of the pier for the call
  • Expect a bag check before boarding

What the evening looks like

Once you are aboard, the evening runs in a loose order: dinner with your chosen main course, then the lake. After dinner you can go outside to see the shoreline and Emerald Bay, or stay in the climate-controlled indoor seating and listen to the live music. Guests differ on the order they would like, and the operator decides when the boat sails and where it turns, so treat the sequence as a guide. The audio guide is included, and the cruise takes about two and a half hours from the dock and back.

What to wear

There is no need to dress formally. Wear what you would put on for a casual restaurant, and add a layer. Indoor seating is climate controlled, but the open decks are cooler, and the lake sets its own weather. Emerald Bay State Park, a short way around the shore, sees summer temperatures from the low 40s Fahrenheit at night to the mid-70s by day, and the yacht operator on the south shore warns that it gets cool on the lake even in summer. A jacket costs nothing in the bag, and a hat or scarf helps after dark, when the open decks lose the last of the day's warmth.

  • A light jacket or fleece, even in July
  • Flat, closed shoes for a moving deck
  • A phone or camera for the bay and the castle

Choosing your main course in time

Dinner includes a main course picked from four: a cowboy ribeye, a roasted chicken breast, a broiled salmon or a mushroom ragu. The operator asks you to contact it at least 24 hours before departure to make your choice, so do this the day before at the latest, rather than leaving it for the dock. The mushroom ragu is the only main with no meat or fish. If anyone in your party has an allergy or a dietary rule, raise it in that same message.

The best months for the light

The Dixie II sails all year, so the cruise has no off season, but the light changes a lot. Sunset comes much later in the summer months than in winter, which means a summer dinner cruise keeps its daylight for longer. Some guests wish the boat sailed earlier, because dinner on board can run past the moment the sun goes down. Pick a date, read the departure time on the booking page, and compare it with the sunset time for that day before you commit. The Sierra Nevada crest rims the lake to the west, so the sun sets behind mountains rather than a flat horizon, and the glow can linger after the sun itself has gone.

Weather and what can cancel a sailing

Tahoe has warm, dry summers and heavy snow between November and April. August is normally the warmest month, with an average high near 79 degrees Fahrenheit and an average low near 40 at the Lake Tahoe Airport. Summer storms are possible, and a guest has written that the operator contacted them to cancel a cruise ahead of a major storm, with hail and strong wind arriving later. Free cancellation applies up to two days before departure. If the weather turns, watch for a message from the operator, and keep your phone number and email current on the booking so it can reach you. One guest described a grey, cloudy late-summer sailing that ended with a vividly coloured sky.

Seeing Emerald Bay from land too

Emerald Bay State Park is reached from State Route 89 on the lake's southwest shore, and its lookout gives a view down onto the island. Going down to Vikingsholm on foot takes a steep one-mile trail from the highway parking lot, or a longer, gentler 1.5-mile trail from Eagle Point Campground, and you have to be fit enough to climb back out. Dogs are not allowed in the Vikingsholm area or on the trails into the bay. The cruise gives you the same scene without the hill.

Who this isn't for

If you cannot manage stairs, check before you book. Wheelchairs are allowed on the boat, but no elevator takes you to the second deck, and the boat has an accessible restroom. If you hate crowds, know that the Dixie II carries up to 500 passengers, with dinner seating capped at 300. If you want a long walk ashore at Emerald Bay, a cruise will not give you one: you see the bay from the water. And if you only have a few days before departure, remember that the free cancellation window closes two days out.
